Hello ! I was wondering if anyone has worked with Power Lifters? I have a client who is a power lifter and she described her breathing technique as she lifts. It is surprising as it contradicts what we teach in Pilates about core stabilization. Instead of drawing in , spreading and lifting of the TVA, she actually expands into her thoracic, lower abs, in an attempt to match the heavy weight she is about to lift over head. ( I envision a puffin, a bird that is round). Power lifters where a belt, which acts as a brace. I started to think about how we use breath to stabilize and realized that she doesn't use her TVA in the way it is intended. Her intraabdominal pressure is all about pushing ... Muscles pull, not push, yes? My concern is over time a sport that encourages this kind of breath control could lead to dire consequences. I would love to hear from anyone who may have any experience training a power lifter. Happy New Year to all, Amy |

Hi Amy, Yes, you are right on target and are thinking about this in the exact right way! When I lived in Venice, CA my studio was right down the street from the famous Gold's Gym in Venice. I had a few Power Lifters that worked with me. The breath they use is correct for the sport and the task at hand. When you are lifting that much weight, you have to use that technique to create lots of IAP to counter the weight you are lifting over your head. I imagine it as a bunch of air bags puffing up around your spine. That being said, these lifters start to use this same efforting breath in every task they do and their breathing and many pressurization systems in their bodies get very screwed up. To cross train for their sport and to keep their bodies healthy ( optimal breathing, continence and pelvic organ health) it is so important for them to practice Pilates. It saved my people and they actually became stronger in their sport and had less injuries. Love Jen |
