Hi there! I recently read an article in the Washington Post regarding nassl breathing as possibly increasing athletic ability. Here’s the link :https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/wellness/when-it-comes-to-breathing-during-exercise-youre-probably-doing-it-wrong/2019/01/23/b4d3c338-1e59-11e9-8b59-0a28f2191131_story.html My understanding about breath , the right way to breath in Pilates , has shifted so many times ; my latest use of breath is I just go with what feels right. My studies of Gyrotonic also have shaped my creative use of breath to be exercise appropriate. But , in through the nose and out through the mouth was my intial Pilates training. What do people think? Are your clients experiencing better results from nasal breathing on inhales and exhales? What is the current understanding of breath in Pilates today based on science? I would love to know what people think, In appreciation, Amy |

Hi Amy! This is such a good question and so valuable to explore. The classical way of breathing in pilates should not be done away with but many other ways of breathing should be injected into the work. I think the more detailed and creative you are with the breathing cues and props the better outcomes you will have. If you have a baby beginner, it is most likely that breathing in through the nose and out the mouth will be easier for them. If you can add details about the pace, the location and adding tactile and sensation filled props ( like the reformer or a heated SmartSpine) they will progress and begin to become aware of subtle shifts. I think the one hard and fast rule is to teach them to not inhale through the mouth. Nasal inhales and exhales are an excellent way to practice but also different paces and rhythms through the nose and the mouth can start to enliven and challenge many areas. You sound like you are already exploring all of these options. Thank you for posting and sharing. Love, Jen |
